Biography
Put together the windmilling of Pete Townshend, the rich and cool musicality of Television and the crack and the sizzle of Neil Young & The Crazy Horse at their loudest and lace the mix with the beaty street poetry of Lou Reed and Springsteen, you pretty much get the main ingredients of Ruotomieli. Top it off with raw originality and there you have it.
Formed originally as a power trio in 1999 in Oulu, Ruotomieli was destined to become one of those rare and daring rock´n´roll acts. Their shows have been known to vary from haunting to exhaustingly liberating all the way to boring. Their second independent album Koiruohobluesband (2004) fearlessly combined bluesy sonic riffrock, spaced-out psychedelic proto-punk and rural country flavors and - against all odds - was highly acclaimed and well received. The record sold out its first pressing and brought home all kinds of homage unimportant to the band. The album and the touring after also stabilised the line-up and the band became a quintet adding Veera Nevala on sax and piano.
As a rock´n´roll unit, Ruotomieli acknowledges the influence of the work of their mentors. However, Ruotomieli is not - and has never been - a retro group. Sure, the band draws its influences largely from certain eras of music but they break knuckles to stand their own ground. Music must be unique or it’s down the crapper. Taking a peek at the lyrics one finds that this is not your everyday nonsense. This sounds what blood tastes like. This is real.
To Ruotomieli rock´n´roll is anything and everything: a beat, a party and a funeral. A reason to live and not to. The perfect form of street art. "It has let us down and picked us up. It's done it all. We are about doing it all. The kids deserve to be able to dig bands daring and worthy. We dare to push our rock´n´roll into something beyond your money's worth" explains the singer/songwriter J. Aslak. With Ruotomieli the chance for blowing it remains all the time. And that is the whole deal: confronting that chance with rock´n´roll. The new album Delta City (2007) pushes Ruotomieli´s envelope by miles and really re-defines the band´s songwriting, swagger and rocking-out and is by far their finest effort to date. Still, it is no way a sure shot. It is a chance taken. A do-or-die album by a do-or-die band.
